c. 2005 Article on Jan King at Serious Art
30 October 2002 Wentworth Courier King-sized prize as sculptor triumphs article by Adam Bell. “ The winner of the prestigious Woollahra Sculpture Prize was announced at an event held at the council’s “Redleaf” chambers last Friday night. Sydney based sculptor Jan King was the grateful recipient of the $10,000 first prize, the richest prize in Australia for freestanding three-dimensional work 80cm or smaller.
31 October 2002 Australian Financial Review Marvels in Miniature Review by John McDonald. “ ….The Woollahra Sculpture Prize presents a very mixed bag – suggesting no firm dividing line between useful encouragement and necessary discouragement in the selection process. For every strong piece there is one that looks cliched or trivial, and that does little for either the artists or the art form. At least the prize went to a deserving winner in Jan King, one of Australia’s best and most underrated sculptors.”
6 April 2003 Sunday Telegraph Art in tranquil surroundings Article on “Sculpture in the Vines” includes mention of Jan King plus photograph of her sculpture ‘Tandava’.

Jan King’s artist statement :-
To make a jellyfish in steel seems a contradiction - like casting smoke in concrete. The hardness of the material is such a contrast to the soft formlessness of the subject - a frozen fluidity.
Jellyfish are forms seemingly without structure - loose - weightless . They drift with the currents, transparent, floating with ribbons of tentacles trailing - like cloud wisps, almost ethereal.
Apparently inert, they hang in the watery element, but in reality are constantly responding to stimuli and some are deadly - another contradiction.
