This collection has been assembled by Max Dingle and Gavin Hughes over a period of nearly fifty years and as a whole reflects the personalities of the two people and, considering purchases have been made individually and jointly, shows a remarkably consistent curatorial vision.
What we have collected can be divided into two main sections: - THE COLLECTION - Art works that reasonably fit into a number of thematic strands within the collection; a strong representation of art made by Australian women artists, a leaning toward “black and white” and “less is more” and it could be argued there are elements of a number of artistic movements ranging from colour field through optical, minimalism, constructivism, suprematism, and hard edge, but in the main, linear abstraction and abstract expressionism are the main focus. - THE ARCHIVE - Art works, books, catalogues, ephemera and materials that inform the themed collection. A sub category of the Archive are the art works, gifts, decorative and utilitarian objects, and materials of a personal nature. These are grouped under a personal / collectables heading. THE BEQUEST - The Collection, including the Archive, was bequested to the City of Shoalhaven to form a part of the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery Collection held at the City Arts Centre, via a formal Deed of Agreement that was drawn up and signed on 27 June 2008. Finally for those searching for a particular artist, all artists are listed under THE ARTISTS alphabetically by surname. Navigation on this site: The main menu is at the top of the page, click on subject eg "home", "the bequest" etc. The blue buttons provide secondary access to other pages of the site. The third level of access is within the text ie click on any works or phrases highlighted in blue.
